Short answer

Lexapro may trigger or worsen restless-leg symptoms in some people, so discuss the timing and treatment options with your prescriber before changing the medicine.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medicine
Lexapro contains escitalopram.
Pattern to note
Symptoms often become more noticeable during rest or in the evening.
Do not do this alone
Do not stop Lexapro suddenly or begin iron without medical advice.

The short answer

Lexapro is the brand name for escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used for depression and anxiety. Restless legs can feel like an urge to move, crawling, pulling, throbbing or uncomfortable sensations that are worse during rest and often in the evening. The timing of symptoms after starting Lexapro or changing its dose can provide a useful clue, but it does not prove that Lexapro is the only cause.

What the connection may mean

Some people notice new or more troublesome leg sensations after an antidepressant is started or its dose is increased. Others have an underlying tendency to restless legs that becomes noticeable at the same time. Low iron stores, chronic kidney disease, pregnancy, family history, caffeine, nicotine and some antihistamines can also contribute. Peripheral neuropathy may cause burning or tingling, but it does not follow the same pattern in every person.

A clinician may ask whether moving or stretching gives temporary relief, whether symptoms disturb sleep, and whether they occur only at rest. They may review your medicines and order blood tests, including an assessment of iron status, when appropriate. Do not start iron on your own: excess iron can be harmful, and supplementation is useful only when a clinician identifies a reason for it.

What to do now

Keep taking Lexapro as prescribed until you have spoken with the prescriber. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms and may allow depression or anxiety symptoms to return. Make a brief note of your Lexapro dose, when the leg sensations begin, how long they last, sleep disruption, and anything that eases them.

Ask the prescriber whether the dose, timing, or another medicine could be contributing. Depending on your mental-health needs and examination, they may suggest monitoring, a gradual dose adjustment, a different treatment, or evaluation for another cause. Gentle walking, stretching, a regular sleep schedule, and limiting caffeine late in the day may reduce symptoms for some people.

When to seek care

Arrange a routine appointment if symptoms began soon after starting Lexapro, are becoming more frequent, interfere with sleep, or make it difficult to sit still. Seek prompt medical advice for one-sided swelling, redness, warmth, severe calf pain, new weakness, or sudden shortness of breath, because these features do not fit ordinary restless legs and need assessment.

Get urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, confusion, or unusually little need for sleep with racing thoughts. These changes can signal a mental-health emergency or a serious medicine reaction. If symptoms are mild but persistent, a clinician can assess for Restless Legs Syndrome and check for treatable contributors such as iron deficiency anaemia or kidney disease.

Questions for your doctor

Useful questions include: Could Lexapro be contributing to my symptoms? Is a dose or timing change appropriate for me? Should I have iron or kidney tests? Could another medicine, caffeine, or a nerve problem explain the sensations? What warning signs should prompt urgent help? If treatment needs to change, how would you taper Lexapro safely and protect my mental-health symptoms?

Questions people ask

Should I stop Lexapro if my legs feel restless?

No. Contact your prescriber for an individual plan, because sudden stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms and destabilise depression or anxiety treatment.

Can low iron cause restless legs while taking Lexapro?

Yes, low iron stores can contribute independently. A clinician can decide whether testing or iron supplementation is appropriate rather than relying on symptoms alone.

How can I tell restless legs from nerve pain?

Restless legs is typically linked to rest, improves temporarily with movement, and may be worse in the evening. Burning, numbness, or persistent altered sensation may point toward a nerve problem, so an assessment is worthwhile.
