What should you know about Lexapro and fatigue?

Short answer

Lexapro can be associated with fatigue, but tiredness may also reflect depression, anxiety, poor sleep, another medicine or a separate health problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Persistent or limiting fatigue deserves a clinical assessment.

How to interpret the tiredness

Fatigue may feel like sleepiness, low energy, slowed thinking or difficulty getting through usual tasks. Note when it began in relation to starting Lexapro or changing the dose, whether it is worse after a dose, and whether sleep has changed. Improvement in mood can take time, so fatigue may come from the underlying condition rather than the medicine alone.

Other possibilities include dehydration, anaemia, infection, alcohol use, kidney disease, coeliac disease or chronic fatigue syndrome. These cannot be confirmed from tiredness alone, and a clinician may decide whether an examination or tests are needed.

What you can do

Take Lexapro exactly as prescribed and speak with the prescriber before stopping it or changing the timing. Keep a brief record of sleep, energy, mood, dose timing and other medicines. Regular meals, fluids, gentle activity and a consistent sleep routine may help while the pattern is reviewed.

Avoid driving or operating equipment if sleepiness affects concentration. Tell the clinician about alcohol, sedating medicines and any new symptoms, because combinations can worsen drowsiness.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for severe confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, chest pain, severe weakness, or thoughts of self-harm. Arrange prompt medical advice if fatigue is rapidly worsening, prevents basic activities, comes with fever or dehydration, or follows a medication change with marked agitation or unusual behaviour.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the timing fits a Lexapro effect, whether another medicine or illness could contribute, how long to monitor the symptom, and whether the dose or treatment plan needs review.

Questions people ask

Should you stop Lexapro because you feel tired?

No. Contact the prescriber first; stopping suddenly can cause problems and may worsen the condition being treated.

Can fatigue have another cause?

Yes. Sleep problems, medicines, dehydration, infection and several health conditions can contribute.
