What should you know about level 1 melanoma?

The phrase level 1 may be used informally for an early stage, but the exact meaning depends on the staging system and the pathology report. Doctors consider tumour thickness, ulceration, margins, and whether there is evidence of spread. A stage label is not the same as a visual description of a mole, and it cannot be confirmed from a photograph alone.

The first treatment is often removal of the melanoma with a margin of surrounding skin, known as Surgical Excision. The pathology report then guides whether a wider Skin Cancer Surgery procedure or another margin is needed. A Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy is considered selectively, based on tumour features and the specialist team's assessment; it is not automatically required for every thin melanoma.

Ask for a copy of the pathology report and clarify the tumour thickness, ulceration, margin status, and stated stage. Attend the recommended surgical and dermatology appointments, and keep the wound clean according to the care instructions. Do not delay a planned procedure because the lesion looks small; melanoma cells can extend beyond what is visible on the surface.

After treatment, protect your skin from ultraviolet exposure, examine your skin regularly, and arrange follow-up at the interval recommended for your diagnosis. Ask someone to check areas that are difficult to see. Report a new changing mole, a firm lump near the scar, persistent bleeding, or swollen nodes rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

Contact the surgical team for spreading redness, pus, wound separation, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Request prompt review for a new or changing pigmented lesion, a rapidly growing nodule, bleeding without clear injury, or a lump near the treated area. Urgent care is needed for severe illness, uncontrolled bleeding, or breathing difficulty.

If a specialist discusses spread beyond the skin, the next steps depend on imaging, pathology, and the sites involved. Treatments such as Immunotherapy are selected for particular situations; Brain Metastases are a separate diagnosis and should not be assumed from an early melanoma label.

Ask what level 1 means in your report, the tumour thickness and ulceration status, whether the margins are clear, whether wider excision or sentinel node assessment is advised, and how often follow-up should occur. Ask which symptoms around the scar or lymph nodes should prompt an earlier appointment.
