What should you know about leukoplakia red spots?

A red spot may be a blocked pore, an inflamed hair follicle, an ingrown hair, or irritation around the mouth. Acne can produce blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed bumps; Folliculitis is centred on follicles and may itch, hurt, or contain pus. Rosacea can cause persistent facial redness and acne-like bumps, while Perioral Dermatitis often clusters around the mouth and can sting or scale.

The word leukoplakia usually refers to a persistent white patch on a mucosal surface, not a typical facial pimple. A red, white, bleeding, ulcerated, or persistent area in the mouth should be examined by a dentist or doctor, especially if it does not settle. A photograph and details about onset, products, shaving, pain, itch, and discharge can help distinguish the possibilities.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, avoid squeezing or scraping, and stop any newly introduced irritating product until the skin settles. If bumps follow shaving, pause close shaving and use a clean, sharp tool with the direction of hair growth; recurrent beard-area bumps may be Razor Bumps. Do not apply steroid cream around the mouth unless a clinician has advised it, because it can aggravate some rashes.
