What should you know about lentigo liver spots?

How the structures involved in Sun Spots differ from normal

Short answer

Lentigo liver spots are flat areas of increased pigment linked with sun exposure, but a changing spot should be checked before cosmetic treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding liver spots

A solar lentigo is usually a flat, clearly visible brown or tan patch on sun-exposed skin such as the face, hands, shoulders or arms. It is caused by a local increase in pigment production after accumulated ultraviolet exposure and is unrelated to liver function.

A lentigo can resemble other dark patches, including some forms of skin cancer. A clinician considers its shape, colour, surface, location and history rather than relying on the name liver spot alone. Dermoscopy or biopsy may be recommended when the appearance is unusual.

Practical next steps

Protect exposed skin with clothing, shade and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid picking or bleaching the mark at home. Take a clear, dated photograph so gradual changes are easier to notice.

Once a clinician is satisfied that the mark is suitable for cosmetic treatment, options may include a chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment or cryotherapy. Choice depends on skin tone, location, thickness, the number of spots and the risk of temporary light or dark colour changes.

When to seek care

Seek a skin assessment for a spot that grows, develops multiple colours, loses symmetry, forms a new lump, bleeds or becomes persistently itchy or sore. Get prompt care for a bleeding lesion that does not settle with pressure or a rapidly inflamed area.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the mark has the typical features of a solar lentigo, whether it needs dermoscopy or biopsy, and which treatment fits your skin tone and site. Discuss aftercare, sun avoidance during healing and what changes should be reported.

Questions people ask

Are liver spots caused by a liver problem?

No. The everyday name refers to their colour; solar lentigines are associated with accumulated sun exposure, not liver disease.

Can a liver spot be removed?

Some confirmed benign spots can be lightened or removed with a clinician-selected procedure, but diagnosis should come before cosmetic treatment.
