What should you know about lentigo liver spots?

A solar lentigo is usually a flat, clearly visible brown or tan patch on sun-exposed skin such as the face, hands, shoulders or arms. It is caused by a local increase in pigment production after accumulated ultraviolet exposure and is unrelated to liver function.

A lentigo can resemble other dark patches, including some forms of skin cancer. A clinician considers its shape, colour, surface, location and history rather than relying on the name liver spot alone. Dermoscopy or biopsy may be recommended when the appearance is unusual.

Protect exposed skin with clothing, shade and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid picking or bleaching the mark at home. Take a clear, dated photograph so gradual changes are easier to notice.

Once a clinician is satisfied that the mark is suitable for cosmetic treatment, options may include a chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment or cryotherapy. Choice depends on skin tone, location, thickness, the number of spots and the risk of temporary light or dark colour changes.

Seek a skin assessment for a spot that grows, develops multiple colours, loses symmetry, forms a new lump, bleeds or becomes persistently itchy or sore. Get prompt care for a bleeding lesion that does not settle with pressure or a rapidly inflamed area.
