Leg yeast infection: what to know

Yeast can overgrow in warm, moist areas such as the groin or the fold where the leg meets the body. Skin may become red, itchy, sore, or cracked, and nearby small spots can appear. A rash on the outer leg may instead be caused by irritation, eczema, allergy, bacterial infection, or another skin condition.

Vaginal thrush commonly causes vulval itching, soreness, and a change in discharge. These symptoms can overlap with other infections, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, pat rather than rub after washing, and choose loose breathable clothing. Avoid fragranced washes, deodorants, and scratching, which can damage irritated skin. Do not use a leftover cream on an unexplained rash, especially near the genitals.

A clinician or pharmacist can help decide whether an antifungal treatment is suitable and whether the problem is on the skin or in the vagina. Follow the product directions and complete the advised course unless a clinician tells you otherwise.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, painful, hot, oozing, cracked, or not improving with appropriate care. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, fever, swelling of the face, or trouble breathing. Get medical advice before self-treating if you are pregnant, have diabetes, or have repeated episodes.

Ask whether the rash needs a skin examination or a swab, whether vaginal symptoms point to thrush or another infection, and which treatment is safe for you. Mention new products, antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, and any previous episodes.
