Leg twist with swelling: treatment and next steps

Short answer
After a leg twist, swelling treatment starts with protection, rest, elevation, and cooling while checking whether a serious injury needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Protect first
- Stop the activity and avoid testing the injury repeatedly when walking is painful.
- Check circulation
- Numbness, unusual coldness, or blue skin after a support is a reason to remove it and seek care.
What a twist can injure
A twist can stretch or tear ligaments, strain muscle, irritate a joint, or cause a fracture. Bruising, tenderness, and swelling around the injury fit a soft-tissue injury, but they do not rule out a break. Swelling that extends beyond the injured area, occurs without a clear injury, or affects both legs may have another explanation, including varicose veins, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, or obesity.
First steps at home
Stop the activity and protect the leg from further twisting. Rest it, raise it above heart level when practical, and apply a cloth-wrapped cool pack for short intervals. Use supportive footwear or a temporary support only if it does not cause numbness or colour change. Avoid heat, alcohol, running, and deep massage early after the injury. A clinician may recommend examination, imaging, rehabilitation, or a walking aid depending on function and tenderness.
When treatment cannot wait
Get urgent care if the leg looks deformed, becomes cold or blue, feels numb, or causes severe pain. Prompt assessment is needed if you cannot bear weight, heard a snap, or swelling is rapidly increasing. Seek emergency help for sudden leg swelling with chest pain or breathlessness. Arrange review if pain or swelling persists, returns, or limits normal movement.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need an X-ray or other scan, when to start weight-bearing, which exercises are safe, and how to prevent another twist during recovery.

Questions people ask
Should I walk on a swollen leg after a twist?
Only walk as far as comfort allows; inability to bear weight or severe pain should prompt assessment.
When might a scan be needed?
A scan may be considered when examination suggests a fracture, significant ligament injury, or symptoms that are not improving.
