Leg swelling after delivery

Short answer
Leg swelling after delivery often settles as retained fluid leaves the body, but one-sided swelling or breathing symptoms need urgent review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening
Fluids given during labour or a caesarean birth, pregnancy-related fluid retention, and reduced movement can all make ankles and legs look puffy after birth. Swelling in both legs that is gradual and improves with rest is often part of recovery.
Post-birth complications can also cause swelling. A clot may cause pain, warmth, redness, or swelling mainly on one side. High blood pressure after birth can occur even when pregnancy has ended, especially with severe headache, visual changes, or upper-abdominal pain.
Support your recovery
Walk gently and regularly if you are able, move your ankles while sitting, and rest with your legs raised. Drink normally unless your clinician has given different advice. Loose footwear and clothing can reduce pressure, and a cool compress may feel soothing.
Tell your postnatal team if swelling is not easing, is getting worse, or makes walking difficult. Do not take a diuretic or use a compression garment without checking that it is appropriate after your birth.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical advice for new one-sided leg swelling, pain, redness, or warmth. Get emergency help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, fainting, or severe headache with visual changes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your blood pressure, urine, and legs should be checked, how much walking is suitable, and whether your delivery medicines or fluids could explain the swelling. Mention any history of Varicose Veins, kidney disease, or heart problems.
