What should you know about leg swelling in pregnancy in which month?

Leg swelling can appear at different points in pregnancy, often becoming more noticeable later on, but the month does not decide whether swelling is safe. Gradual swelling in both feet or ankles is usually assessed differently from sudden swelling, marked asymmetry, or swelling with other symptoms.

Growing uterine pressure, standing, heat, activity, and individual fluid changes can all affect when swelling becomes visible. Some people notice it earlier, while others have little swelling. A sudden change at any stage matters more than whether it occurs in an early, middle, or late month. Rapid swelling of the face or hands with headache or vision changes may occur with Pre-eclampsia and requires prompt advice.

Notice whether both legs are affected and whether the swelling improves after rest. Raise your feet, move your ankles, avoid standing still for long periods, and choose comfortable footwear. Keep antenatal appointments, where blood pressure and urine checks help identify problems that swelling alone cannot confirm. Do not use medication or sharply reduce fluids without advice.

Seek urgent maternity advice for swelling that appears suddenly, is much worse on one side, or is painful, red, or warm. Get emergency help for chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, or coughing blood. At any month, severe headache, visual changes, upper abdominal pain, or sudden face and hand swelling needs prompt assessment.
