Leg swelling during the ninth month of pregnancy

As the uterus grows, it can make it harder for blood to return from the legs, especially after standing or later in the day. Hormonal fluid changes may add to ankle and foot puffiness. Do not restrict fluids, begin a salt-free diet, or use medicines for swelling without personalised advice.

Contact your maternity service urgently for a severe headache, visual disturbance, pain below the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, or a strong sense that you are unwell. Emergency help is needed for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a painful, red, warm, suddenly swollen leg. Follow your maternity team’s instructions about where to attend.
