Short answer

Leg swelling after knee replacement is common during recovery, but rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, or breathing symptoms should be assessed urgently.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the leg may swell

Replacement surgery irritates tissues around the knee, and healing fluid can track down toward the calf, ankle, and foot. Reduced walking can add to this dependent swelling. Bruising and a feeling of tightness may accompany recovery, but the overall trend should gradually improve as movement returns. A clot is a separate concern when swelling is mainly in one leg and comes with new calf pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness. [Varicose Veins](/conditions/varicose-veins/) may prolong heaviness, while swelling in both legs can have broader causes such as [Heart Failure](/conditions/heart-failure/) or [Chronic Kidney Disease](/conditions/chronic-kidney-disease/).

Supporting recovery

Follow the surgeon and physiotherapist instructions for exercises, walking, rest, and elevation. Keep the operated leg raised when resting if advised, and use ice only in the way your team recommends to protect skin and the wound. Take prescribed pain relief and clot-prevention medicine as directed. Check the incision for increasing redness, drainage, separation, or fever. Do not kneel, overexercise, apply deep massage, or change a dressing plan without guidance. Compare swelling over time and report a sudden change, rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.

When to seek urgent care

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, a hot or draining wound, fever, or swelling that suddenly increases. Seek urgent assessment for one-sided calf or thigh swelling with tenderness, warmth, or redness. Emergency help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or coughing blood. A cold, pale, blue, numb, or severely painful foot also requires immediate attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what swelling pattern is expected for your stage of recovery, how often to elevate and exercise, when compression is appropriate, and which wound or calf changes should be reported the same day.
