Short answer

Leg swelling after cellulitis can linger while inflamed tissues and lymphatic drainage recover, but renewed redness, heat, pain, or fever needs prompt review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What lingering swelling can mean

Cellulitis inflames the skin and tissues beneath it. Even after treatment starts working, local fluid drainage may remain sluggish, so the affected leg can stay swollen or feel tight. The skin should generally become less hot, painful, and red as recovery progresses. Swelling that is getting worse, redness that is spreading, or a new fever can indicate that infection is still active or has returned. A clot can also cause one-sided swelling and pain, while [Varicose Veins](/conditions/varicose-veins/) can contribute to ongoing heaviness. Swelling in both legs may have a separate cause, including [Heart Failure](/conditions/heart-failure/) or [Chronic Kidney Disease](/conditions/chronic-kidney-disease/).

Looking after the leg

Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Keep any skin break clean, protect the area from scratching, and elevate the leg when resting if that is comfortable. Gentle movement can reduce stiffness, but avoid strenuous activity while the skin is painful or the infection is active. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice spread, although it does not replace review. Do not use compression over an acutely infected area unless your clinician has advised it. Arrange follow-up if swelling remains troublesome, the skin breaks down, or episodes keep returning.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly if redness, warmth, tenderness, drainage, or fever returns or worsens, or if the swelling is not improving with treatment. Seek urgent help for severe pain, confusion, rapid breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading skin change. Sudden one-sided swelling with calf pain or breathlessness also needs urgent assessment because it may not be explained by cellulitis alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the infection is responding, whether a wound or lymphatic problem is prolonging swelling, when compression is safe, and how to reduce the chance of another episode.

Questions people ask

How long can swelling last after cellulitis?

It may persist after the infection improves because tissue inflammation and drainage recover gradually, but the trend should be discussed if it is not settling.

Can I wear compression for post-cellulitis swelling?

Ask your clinician first; compression may be unsuitable while infection is active or the skin is damaged.
