Leg swelling after C-section delivery: what to know

A caesarean birth involves pregnancy-related fluid changes, intravenous fluids, and a period of reduced walking. These can make both legs or ankles look puffy for a while. The operation and reduced mobility also make a blood clot an important possibility when swelling is mainly on one side, especially with pain, warmth, or redness. A wound infection usually causes increasing wound pain, discharge, or fever rather than isolated leg swelling. Keep the incision clean and watch for fever, spreading redness, or new drainage. Compare both legs rather than judging swelling from memory, and note when symptoms began. Do not stop prescribed medicine, apply tight compression, or massage a painful swollen leg without advice. Call your maternity, surgical, or primary-care team if swelling is increasing, uncomfortable, or not settling.

Get urgent assessment for sudden swelling of one leg, new calf or thigh pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness. Emergency help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or coughing blood. Contact your maternity team urgently for severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, or marked swelling of the face and hands after delivery. Fever with a painful or draining incision also needs prompt review.

Ask whether your swelling is expected after surgery, whether the wound and blood pressure need checking, how to increase walking safely, and how long to continue any prescribed clot-prevention treatment.
