Leg muscle cramps at night: what to know

Short answer
Leg muscle cramps at night are sudden, involuntary contractions that often ease with gentle stretching, movement and attention to triggers such as dehydration or muscle strain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What nighttime cramps can mean
A cramp may affect the calf, foot or thigh and can leave the muscle tender afterward. Episodes can follow unusual activity, prolonged standing, pregnancy, reduced mobility or some medicines. They can also occur without a clear cause. Recurrent cramps deserve attention to patterns, including new weakness, swelling, numbness, cold feet or symptoms of an underlying condition such as peripheral arterial disease, chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism or vitamin D deficiency.
What to do during and between episodes
When a cramp starts, straighten the leg and gently pull the toes toward you if the calf is affected. Stand and walk carefully, or massage the tight area. A warm shower may relax the muscle; use heat cautiously. During the day, drink regularly, warm up before exercise and stretch the calves and hamstrings gently. Keep a note of timing, activity, medicines and which muscle is affected so a clinician can look for a pattern.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if cramps are frequent, worsening, disturbing sleep or accompanied by weakness, persistent pain, altered sensation or difficulty walking. Seek urgent help for a swollen, red or hot leg, sudden severe pain, a cold or pale foot, or new breathlessness or chest pain. These features need assessment rather than home treatment alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether a medicine, nerve problem, circulation issue or mineral imbalance could be contributing; whether you need an examination or blood tests; and which stretching or treatment plan fits your health conditions.

Questions people ask
Why are leg cramps worse at night?
Resting muscles may shorten, and the position of the ankle or foot can keep a calf muscle under tension. Activity, hydration and medicines may also influence episodes.
Should I take a supplement for cramps?
Do not start a supplement routinely. A clinician can check whether a deficiency or another cause is present and advise what is appropriate.
