Left ventricular heart failure symptoms

The left ventricle pumps blood to the body. When it cannot pump or fill normally, pressure may rise in the lungs. You may notice breathlessness during movement or when lying down, waking at night gasping, a persistent Cough, or unusual Fatigue. Some people also develop swollen ankles, fast weight changes or Palpitations. These symptoms have other possible causes, so their pattern and examination matter; a symptom alone does not establish heart failure.

Book a clinical review for new, persistent or worsening symptoms. Note when breathlessness occurs, whether pillows help, how far you can walk, and any swelling or changes in heartbeat. Bring a list of medicines and health conditions. Your clinician may check blood pressure, heart rhythm, oxygen level and fluid status, then arrange further testing if appropriate. Follow your prescribed plan and do not alter heart medicines without advice.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pressure, fainting, blue lips, confusion or a sudden inability to speak in full sentences. Contact a clinician promptly when symptoms worsen over hours or days, swelling rapidly increases, or a new racing or irregular heartbeat comes with dizziness or breathlessness.
