What should you know about left total mastectomy?

A total mastectomy removes breast tissue; whether the nipple, skin or nearby lymph nodes are included depends on the planned operation. The specimen is examined to confirm tumour type, size, margins and other features. A drain may be placed temporarily to remove fluid. The operation changes the contour of the left chest, and numbness, tightness or altered sensation can persist while tissues heal.

Before surgery, discuss medicines, smoking, wound care, arm movement and whether reconstruction is immediate, delayed or not planned. Some patients need treatment before surgery, while others need additional treatment after the pathology review. Gentle shoulder exercises usually begin according to the surgical team's instructions. A properly fitted support garment, practical help at home and emotional support can make the early recovery easier.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, increasing redness or warmth, pus, wound separation, sudden swelling, uncontrolled pain, shortness of breath or chest pain. Report arm heaviness or swelling, because early assessment can help identify lymphoedema and guide therapy. Follow drain instructions and call if the drain stops working, becomes dislodged or changes suddenly.

Ask what type of mastectomy is planned, whether lymph nodes will be assessed, and whether reconstruction or a prosthesis is available. Discuss whether lumpectomy is a suitable alternative, what pathology results may change, how long drains may stay, and when to restart normal arm activities.
