What should you know about left skin-sparing mastectomy?

The surgeon removes breast tissue through an incision designed to preserve the outer skin envelope. The nipple and areola may be removed or preserved depending on the disease and whether leaving them is safe. The preserved skin does not mean breast tissue remains underneath.

Reconstruction may be performed during the same operation or planned later. Healing, blood supply to the skin, smoking, other health conditions and additional treatment can affect the options. Numbness, tightness and changes in shape are common parts of the recovery conversation.

Ask the breast and reconstructive surgeons where the incision will be, whether the nipple will remain, and what happens if the skin does not heal as expected. Discuss implant or tissue-based reconstruction, drains, medicines and how any treatment before surgery changes timing.

Plan loose clothing, transport and help with daily tasks. Follow wound and drain instructions closely. Gentle shoulder movement is introduced according to the surgical plan; report tightness, arm swelling or reduced movement rather than pushing through pain.

Contact the team urgently if preserved skin becomes unusually pale, dark, cool or increasingly painful, or if redness, warmth, fever, discharge, wound opening or sudden swelling develops. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden weakness.
