Left-Sided Colonic Diverticulosis

Diverticulosis is different from diverticulitis: the latter describes inflammation or infection affecting a pouch. Diverticulosis may be found during a scan or bowel examination and may cause no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they can include lower abdominal discomfort, bloating, constipation or altered bowel habits. Pain that becomes constant or severe, fever, vomiting or bleeding needs assessment because other bowel conditions can look similar.

Aim for regular fluids, gradual fibre from foods you tolerate and routine movement. Increase fibre slowly if constipation is present, because a sudden change can worsen bloating. Do not use laxatives or pain medicines repeatedly without advice. A GP consultation can help distinguish uncomplicated symptoms from diverticular disease and decide whether tests are needed. Nutrition counselling may be useful when food choices, constipation or recurrent discomfort are difficult to manage.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever with abdominal tenderness, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, faintness, or fresh or heavy rectal bleeding. Arrange prompt review for a new persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss or recurring left-lower abdominal pain. Do not assume every symptom is caused by diverticulosis.
