Left-Side Ovary Pain During Ovulation

Left-sided pain around ovulation can be ovulation pain, but severe, prolonged, or unusual pain needs assessment. Ovulation pain, also called mittelschmerz, may feel like a twinge, ache, or cramp on one side of the lower abdomen. It can occur when an ovary releases an egg and may settle without treatment.

Pain that appears near the middle of your cycle, stays on one side, and settles within a short period is more consistent with ovulation pain. The symptom can occur on either side and may not switch in a predictable pattern. Pain that lasts beyond the expected window, returns frequently, or is linked with painful periods, pain during sex, or bowel symptoms may need evaluation for conditions such as Endometriosis. An Ovarian Cysts can also cause one-sided pelvic discomfort.

Keep a cycle diary showing the first day of each period, the day pain starts, its side, intensity, duration, and any bleeding or discharge. Rest, a warm pack, and simple pain relief that is suitable for you may help. Check with a pharmacist or clinician if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, have stomach or kidney problems, or take other medicines before using pain relief.

Get urgent help for sudden severe pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, or a swollen abdomen. Seek medical advice when pain continues, interferes with normal activity, occurs with a late period, or feels different from your usual cycle. A symptom's urgency depends on these warning signs, not simply on its being one-sided.
