Left-Side Muscle Pain: What to Know

Pain in the side between the ribs and hip is often called flank pain. A muscle cause is more plausible when discomfort began after lifting, exercise, coughing, or an awkward movement and changes with twisting or pressing the area. Pain that comes in waves, spreads toward the groin, or occurs with blood in the urine can fit Kidney Stones. Fever, chills, burning urine, or feeling unwell can point toward a Kidney Infection or Urinary Tract Infection instead. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis.

For a mild pain that clearly follows a strain, reduce the provoking activity while keeping gentle movement, and use a wrapped cold or warm pack according to what feels more comfortable. Avoid heavy lifting until movement is easier. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions. Note the onset, movement triggers, urinary changes, fever, rash, nausea, and whether the pain travels. Use pain relief only if it is suitable for your health conditions and medicines.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with flank pain, vomiting that prevents drinking, blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, faintness, new weakness, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Arrange a review when pain persists, follows significant injury, returns without a clear strain, or comes with urinary symptoms. A clinician may need to examine the abdomen, back, and urine.
