What should you know about left side flank pain under ribs?

Flank pain sits toward the side and back, but pain under the left ribs can overlap with the chest wall, upper abdomen, and kidney area. A tender spot that worsens with twisting, lifting, deep breathing, or pressing may be muscular or related to the ribs. Burning urine, urgency, fever, or urine that looks unusual can occur with a Urinary Tract Infection; a Kidney Infection may produce flank pain with fever and feeling unwell. Waves of severe pain, nausea, or pain moving downward can occur with Kidney Stones. The position is useful information, but it does not by itself reveal the cause.

Keep a short record of the pain: exact position, onset, duration, movement or breathing triggers, and whether it follows eating or exertion. Note fever, nausea, bowel changes, cough, breathlessness, urinary symptoms, or a rash.
