What should you know about left shoulder MRI?

Short answer
A left shoulder MRI uses magnetic fields to create detailed images of tendons, muscles, cartilage, ligaments, and nearby bone without an incision.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Shows
- Tendons, muscles, cartilage, ligaments, and bone
- Before scanning
- Report implants, metal fragments, and pregnancy
What the scan can show
The images may help clinicians assess a rotator cuff tendon, labrum, cartilage, joint fluid, inflammation, or bone marrow. An MRI finding is interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination; an image by itself does not explain how much discomfort or limitation you have. A specialist may compare both shoulders when that helps clarify an unusual finding.
Tell the imaging team about implanted metal, a pacemaker, metal fragments, pregnancy, kidney problems, or difficulty staying in an enclosed space. Some examinations use contrast, and the team will explain whether it is suitable for you.
Preparing for the appointment
Follow the centre's instructions about food, drink, medicines, and contrast. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery, cards, and electronic items before entering the scan area. During the scan, lie still while the machine makes loud sounds; ear protection is usually provided. Ask whether a support person or a calming plan is available if enclosed spaces are difficult.
When to seek care
An MRI is usually a planned investigation, not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek immediate care for new weakness with facial or speech changes, severe chest symptoms, or breathing difficulty. Contact the ordering clinician promptly after a major injury, sudden inability to use the arm, or rapidly increasing swelling, redness, or fever.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what question the MRI is intended to answer, whether contrast is needed, and when the report will be reviewed with you. Ask how a finding would change physiotherapy, activity, medication, or possible surgery such as Rotator Cuff Repair.

Questions people ask
Can I move during a shoulder MRI?
You need to stay still for clear images; the team can communicate with you throughout the scan.
Does an MRI result decide treatment by itself?
No. The result is matched with your symptoms, examination, and goals before treatment is chosen.
