What should you know about left posterior flank pain?

Short answer
Left posterior flank pain can come from a strained muscle, kidney stone, infection or another nearby problem, so accompanying symptoms guide the next step.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- Between the lower ribs and hip, toward the back
- Clues to record
- Movement effect, fever, urine changes, vomiting and onset
What it may mean
Pain behind the lower ribs and above the hip may arise from back muscles, especially after lifting, twisting or prolonged posture. Kidney-related pain is often deeper and may spread toward the abdomen or groin. Kidney Stones can cause intense waves of pain, while Kidney Infection may cause flank discomfort with fever, chills, nausea or feeling unwell. A Urinary Tract Infection may add burning, urgency or frequent urination. The location is useful, but it cannot establish the cause on its own.
Note whether movement, coughing or pressing the area changes the pain. Also record urine changes, fever, vomiting, rash, bowel symptoms and when the pain began. This information helps a clinician assess the pattern.
What to do
Rest from movements that clearly worsen the pain, but keep gently mobile if movement is comfortable. Use a warm pack for a possible muscle strain and take only pain relief that is safe for your health conditions and other medicines. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction. Arrange a medical assessment for new persistent pain, pain with urinary symptoms, or pain that keeps returning. Do not rely on home treatment if you feel feverish or increasingly unwell.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for flank pain with fever or chills, repeated vomiting, difficulty passing urine, blood in the urine with severe pain, faintness, confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms. Immediate assessment is also important after a significant injury, during pregnancy, or if you have known kidney disease or one functioning kidney. Severe pain that cannot be controlled needs prompt evaluation even without urinary symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Does the examination suggest muscle, kidney or another source? Do I need urine tests or imaging? Which pain relief is suitable for me? Which changes should make me seek urgent help?

Questions people ask
Can a muscle strain cause posterior flank pain?
Yes. Pain that follows lifting or twisting and changes with movement or touch can come from muscles, although other causes may need assessment.
Does flank pain always mean a kidney problem?
No. Muscles, nerves and nearby organs can cause similar pain. Fever or urinary symptoms make medical review more important.
