Some people notice one-sided lower-abdominal discomfort as an egg is released. It may be a sharp sensation or a dull cramp and can last briefly or continue for a limited period. Pain may switch sides in different cycles. A similar symptom can occur with an ovarian cyst, endometriosis, infection, bowel trouble, or urinary problems. The symptom describes where you feel discomfort; it does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Keep a simple symptom diary alongside cycle dates. Include whether the pain is steady or intermittent, what makes it better or worse, and any bleeding, discharge, nausea, fever, bowel, or urinary changes.
