What should you know about left neck lump?

The neck contains lymph nodes, the thyroid, salivary glands, muscles, blood vessels, and other structures. A lump may appear during or after an infection and then settle, but a persistent, firm, enlarging, or fixed lump needs clinical assessment. Note when the lump began, whether it changes with illness, and whether it is growing or painful. Could a dental, throat, thyroid, or lymph-node cause fit the examination? When and how will I receive results? What happens if the first test is inconclusive?
