What should you know about left nasal congestion?

The nasal lining can swell with a cold, allergic rhinitis, dust exposure or sinus inflammation. Nasal cycling can also make one side feel more restricted at different times. A blocked nose may come with sneezing, clear discharge, facial pressure, reduced smell or a cough. A fixed feeling on the left, especially when it continues after other cold symptoms settle, can be related to a bent nasal partition, a polyp or another local cause. The symptom alone does not identify one condition.

Notice whether the blockage changes with position, follows exposure to dust or pollen, or occurs with fever, facial pain or blood-stained discharge. These details help a clinician decide whether examination, allergy treatment or further assessment is appropriate.

Use gentle saline spray or rinse according to the product directions, keep indoor air comfortably humid, and avoid smoke and other nasal irritants. Do not forcefully blow the nose. Decongestant sprays should only be used for the short period stated on the label because longer use can worsen congestion. Arrange a GP review if the left side stays blocked, repeatedly returns, or interferes with sleep, smell or exercise.

Seek urgent medical help for congestion with severe breathing difficulty, swelling around the eye, vision changes, a severe headache, confusion, or a high fever with marked illness. Arrange prompt assessment for repeated one-sided nosebleeds, worsening facial pain, foul-smelling discharge, or a blockage that does not improve. A blocked nose at night with loud snoring, pauses in breathing or marked daytime sleepiness also warrants review because sleep-related breathing problems may need assessment.
