What should you know about left microdiscectomy?

Short answer

A left microdiscectomy removes disc material that is pressing on a nerve, aiming to ease leg symptoms while preserving as much normal tissue as possible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main target
Disc material pressing on a spinal nerve
Common symptom pattern
One-sided leg pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness
Recovery support
Walking guidance and progressive rehabilitation

What the procedure addresses

A disc in the lower back can bulge or rupture and irritate a nearby nerve. This may produce left-sided shooting pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness down the leg, often described as Sciatica or Radiating Leg Pain. During microdiscectomy, the surgeon reaches the affected area through a small opening and removes the fragment causing pressure. A Surgical Microscope can improve visualisation of the nerve and surrounding structures.

The operation is considered when symptoms persist despite appropriate non-surgical care, or when nerve compression causes concerning weakness. It does not repair every source of back pain, so the expected benefit should be linked to the particular nerve findings.

Preparing and recovering

Before surgery, share your medicines, allergies, health conditions, and any change in bladder, bowel, or leg function. Follow the surgical team’s instructions about eating, medicines, wound care, and walking. Early gentle movement is commonly encouraged, while heavy lifting, repeated bending, and twisting are limited until the surgeon advises otherwise.

A rehabilitation plan may use Physiotherapy to rebuild trunk and leg control and guide a gradual return to work or exercise. Depending on the diagnosis, alternatives such as Epidural Steroid Injection or Endoscopic Spine Surgery may be discussed. Keep the wound clean and note changes in pain, strength, sensation, or walking.

Warning signs after surgery

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or new weakness or numbness. Seek emergency care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, severe rapidly worsening leg weakness, or difficulty walking that is new.

Questions to ask

Which nerve is compressed, and what symptom should the operation target? What restrictions apply to lifting, driving, work, and exercise? What is the rehabilitation plan? Which changes after surgery require an urgent call?

Questions people ask

Does microdiscectomy treat all back pain?

No. It is aimed mainly at symptoms caused by a specific compressed nerve; other sources of back pain may need different care.

Why might physiotherapy be recommended?

It can help restore movement, trunk and leg control, and confidence as activity is increased after the surgical team permits it.
