What should you know about left lung base nodule?

A nodule can reflect scar tissue, a past infection, inflammation, or a tumour. Its position at the lung base does not by itself identify the cause. A radiologist considers its size, shape, density, edges, and whether it has changed compared with earlier images. Symptoms may be absent, so the finding is often discovered during imaging for another reason.

A [CT Scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/ct-scan/) gives more detail than a basic chest image and may clarify whether the area is truly in the lung or close to the diaphragm. The result is interpreted alongside age, smoking history, previous cancer, infections, and immune health.

Keep the appointment where the scan is reviewed and bring earlier chest images or reports if available. Do not start or stop medicines based on the scan alone. Ask how the nodule will be measured, what change would alter the plan, and who will contact you with results.

A nodule itself may not cause an emergency. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, sudden chest pain, fainting, or blue lips. Arrange prompt clinical advice for new or worsening cough, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, night sweats, or increasing pain. If a previous cancer is relevant, mention it when the scan is booked and reviewed.
