Left lip swollen: causes and urgent warning signs

One-sided lip swelling can follow biting the lip, dental irritation, a cold sore, a blocked gland, a new cosmetic product, or an insect bite. It can also be part of Angioedema, a deeper swelling reaction that may occur with or without hives. Timing matters: swelling soon after a food, medicine, sting, or product suggests a reaction, while pain, warmth, pus, or a tooth problem points toward local inflammation or infection. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop any new lip product or suspected trigger and rinse the mouth gently if an irritant may be involved. Use a cool compress on the outside of the lip and avoid squeezing, piercing, or applying household remedies. Take a photo and note when the swelling began, what you ate or used, and whether it is enlarging. Arrange medical advice for new, unexplained, painful, or persistent swelling.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, dizziness, faintness, or rapidly spreading swelling. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe pain, fever, pus, facial swelling, or swelling after an injury.
