Left leg swelling during pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Left leg swelling during pregnancy may be harmless, but new one-sided swelling needs prompt medical assessment because a blood clot is possible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern to notice
- One-sided, sudden, painful, warm, or red swelling needs prompt assessment.
- Avoid
- Do not massage a newly swollen leg before a clot has been considered.
What left leg swelling can mean
Pregnancy can increase fluid in the tissues and pressure on veins, often causing swelling around the feet and ankles. Swelling that is clearly greater on the left, appears suddenly, or comes with warmth, redness, tenderness, or calf pain is different from mild swelling in both legs. A clot in a deep vein can present with one-sided leg swelling. Varicose veins can also make one leg feel heavy or look enlarged. Less commonly, swelling may accompany a heart or kidney problem. A swollen ankle is not enough to identify the cause, so the pattern and associated symptoms matter.
What you can do now
Contact your maternity team, doctor, or urgent-care service today for advice about new or increasing one-sided swelling. Do not massage the swollen leg or start compression garments until a clinician has considered a clot. While waiting, rest with the leg supported, avoid sitting still for long periods, and keep normally hydrated. Note when the swelling began, whether it is worsening, and any pain, redness, warmth, breathlessness, or chest symptoms. Mention pregnancy stage, recent travel, reduced movement, previous clots, and medicines.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, faintness, or a racing heartbeat with leg swelling. These symptoms can signal that a clot has travelled to the lungs. Seek urgent assessment as well for severe leg pain, rapidly increasing swelling, marked redness, or feeling acutely unwell. Do not drive yourself if you are short of breath or faint.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling pattern needs an ultrasound, which activities are safe while it is being assessed, and which changes should prompt emergency help. Ask how to distinguish ordinary pregnancy-related swelling from a clot, and whether any personal risk factors change your follow-up.

Questions people ask
Is swelling in one leg normal in pregnancy?
Mild swelling is common, but swelling that is new or clearly worse on one side should be assessed because a clot can cause it.
Can I wait until my next appointment?
Contact your maternity team today rather than waiting if the swelling is new, worsening, painful, warm, or red.
