Left leg swelling below the knee has several possible causes, and new one-sided swelling should be assessed by its pattern. A minor injury, prolonged standing, varicose veins, or excess fluid can produce swelling. Sudden swelling with warmth, redness, tenderness, or breathlessness needs prompt medical attention because the cause cannot be judged from appearance alone.

Do not massage a newly swollen, painful leg until a clinician has assessed it.
