Left hand and leg swelling: what should you know?

A recent injury, insect bite, infection, or joint inflammation can swell one area. Swelling in both a hand and a leg on the same side may also follow reduced movement or a problem affecting veins or lymph drainage. Varicose veins can contribute to leg swelling, while heart failure and chronic kidney disease can cause fluid to collect in the limbs, often with other symptoms. Obesity can add pressure to veins but does not explain every new episode. The pattern, speed of onset, warmth, colour, and associated symptoms help a clinician narrow the cause.

Remove tight rings, bracelets, and watches before swelling increases. Keep the affected limb comfortably raised and avoid prolonged stillness, but do not massage a painful, hot, or suddenly swollen area. Compare both sides and note any redness, tenderness, skin changes, breathlessness, or recent travel, injury, illness, or new medicine. Seek emergency help if swelling is accompanied by chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, faintness, or severe weakness. Get urgent assessment if the limb becomes very painful, cold, pale, blue, hot, red, or rapidly larger, or if you cannot move it normally. Fever with spreading redness also needs prompt care.
