Left flank sharp pain: what to know

A brief, pinpoint pain that follows a twist, stretch, cough, or impact can involve the muscles, ribs, or nerves of the side. A kidney stone may cause sharp or cramping flank pain that comes in waves and travels toward the groin; nausea or blood in the urine can occur. Kidney infection can cause a deeper, persistent flank ache with fever, chills, nausea, or feeling unwell. Urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, or frequent urination. Sharpness describes the sensation, not the source, so context and examination are needed.

If the pain is mild and linked to a clear strain, stop the provoking activity, avoid lifting, and use comfortable gentle movement. A covered warm pack may ease muscle spasm. Keep notes about whether the pain is constant or wave-like, where it travels, and any urine or digestive changes. Do not use leftover antibiotics.
