Left flank pain with movement: what to know

A strained muscle, irritated rib joint, or back problem can hurt when you turn, bend, walk, cough, or tense your trunk. The pain may be local and reproducible with certain actions. A kidney stone can cause pain that comes in waves, changes intensity, or moves down toward the groin. Kidney infection can present with flank pain plus fever, chills, nausea, or marked tiredness. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, or frequent urination and can sometimes be associated with pain higher in the side. These conditions can overlap, so the full symptom pattern matters more than movement alone.

Scale back the movement that triggers symptoms and avoid heavy lifting for now. Gentle walking and relaxed position changes are reasonable if they do not increase pain. A warm pack over clothing may soothe a tight muscle. Drink your usual fluids unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Note the timing, severity, trigger, radiation, urine appearance, bowel symptoms, and temperature. A clinician may examine the area and perform a urine test; additional tests depend on the findings.

Use urgent services for sudden severe pain, fever with flank pain, uncontrollable vomiting, fainting, confusion, blood in the urine, inability to urinate, or severe abdominal tenderness. Seek a prompt appointment when symptoms persist, recur, follow trauma, or interfere with normal activity. Do not delay contacting a clinician if you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or take medicines that affect immunity.
