Kidney stones may produce waves of intense pain that travel downward, sometimes with nausea or blood in the urine. Kidney infection may present with a steady ache, fever, chills, feeling unwell, and urinary symptoms. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, or frequent urination; flank pain with fever needs prompt review. Pain linked to lifting, twisting, or touch can be muscular, while back or nerve irritation may send discomfort along the side. Male-specific factors such as testicular pain, groin symptoms, or difficulty passing urine should be reported.

Record the start time, severity, triggers, and whether the pain moves toward the groin or testicle. Drink normally unless told otherwise, avoid strenuous activity, and take suitable over-the-counter pain relief according to its label. Arrange a clinician visit when pain persists, recurs, or affects urination. Examination and urine testing can help decide whether further assessment is needed.

Get urgent help for severe pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, a swollen or very painful testicle, inability to urinate, visible blood in urine, fainting, confusion, or sudden deterioration. Pain after an injury also warrants prompt assessment.
