Where is left flank pain located?

Pain in this area can come from muscles, the spine, bowel, or organs in the urinary system. A kidney stone may cause sharp pain that moves toward the groin, while a kidney infection may cause a deeper ache with fever, chills, nausea, or urinary changes. A urinary tract infection can cause burning or frequent urination, although flank discomfort needs assessment if it occurs with fever. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether movement, coughing, meals, urination, or a recent strain changes the pain. Rest from heavy lifting, drink normally unless a clinician has limited your fluids, and use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and taken as directed.
