Left Flank Pain in Females: What to Know

Pain in the left flank can come from the muscles, bowel, kidney, or structures in the pelvis. A kidney infection commonly presents with flank pain and may include fever, chills, nausea, or painful urination. Kidney stones can cause intense pain that travels toward the groin and may bring blood in the urine. A urinary tract infection may cause burning or frequent urination, although flank pain suggests the problem may involve the upper urinary tract. Period-related pain, an ovarian problem, or pelvic infection can also be felt toward the side. Pregnancy should always be mentioned because it changes which tests and medicines are appropriate.

Write down the start of the pain, its relation to movement or the menstrual cycle, and any bleeding, discharge, fever, nausea, or urinary changes. Arrange medical advice when pain is persistent, recurrent, or unexplained. A clinician may examine the abdomen and pelvis and request urine testing; pregnancy testing or imaging may be considered when relevant. Do not start leftover antibiotics or take a new medicine without checking that it is suitable for you.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic or flank pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever with vomiting, confusion, inability to pass urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms. If pregnancy is possible, pain with bleeding, dizziness, or faintness needs immediate assessment. These signs can reflect conditions where timing matters.
