What should you know about left flank cramping pain?

The flank is the side between the ribs and the hip. Cramps that follow movement, lifting, coughing, or a tender spot may involve muscles. Colicky pain that comes in waves, particularly with nausea or blood in the urine, can occur with kidney stones. Kidney infection presents with flank pain alongside fever, chills, feeling unwell, or urinary symptoms. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, or frequent urination, although flank pain can signal that infection is higher in the urinary system.

Record when the cramps began, whether they come in waves, and what makes them better or worse. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction, and avoid strenuous lifting until the cause is clearer. Do not rely on leftover antibiotics. A clinician may need to examine your abdomen and back, check a urine sample, and decide whether further testing is needed. Keep a note of urine colour, temperature, nausea, and any change in pain.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with flank pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, inability to pass urine, or visible blood in the urine. Arrange assessment soon if cramps recur, disturb sleep, or continue despite rest, especially if urinary symptoms develop.

Ask whether the pattern fits a muscle problem, kidney stone, kidney infection, or urinary tract infection; whether urine testing is needed; and which pain medicines are suitable for you. Share recent illness, urinary changes, pregnancy possibility, and any previous stone or infection history.
