Left breast pain during ovulation: what to know

Around ovulation, changing oestrogen and progesterone levels can make breast tissue feel tender, full, heavy, or aching. The discomfort may affect one breast more than the other and can extend toward the armpit. Chest-wall muscles, a bra that does not fit well, skin irritation, or a benign breast cyst can also cause pain in a specific area. Pain alone is not a reliable way to identify a serious breast condition.

Note when the pain starts, where it is, how long it lasts, and whether it follows the same point in your cycle. A supportive, comfortable bra, warm or cool compresses, and reducing pressure on the sore area may help. Discuss suitable pain relief with a pharmacist or clinician, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have another medical condition. A clinician may examine the breast and arrange imaging when the pattern is new or unclear.

Arrange medical assessment for a new lump, nipple discharge, nipple or skin change, redness, warmth, fever, or pain that is worsening or does not settle. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathlessness, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Breast pain with redness and fever can signal infection and may need treatment such as drainage.
