Left athletic pubalgia: what to know

How the structures involved in Sports Hernia differ from normal

Short answer

Left athletic pubalgia is activity-related pain around the left groin or lower abdominal wall, often aggravated by sprinting, twisting, kicking, or sudden direction changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
Sprinting, kicking, twisting, and rapid changes of direction.
Rehab focus
Progressive hip, trunk, and pelvic loading matched to symptoms.

What the pattern can mean

Athletic pubalgia is an overload injury involving the muscles, tendons, and connective tissues that support the pelvis. Pain may appear during sport and settle with rest, then return when high-speed or forceful movements resume. It is not the same as a groin hernia, although the symptoms can overlap.

A clinician may assess walking, resisted hip and trunk movements, abdominal control, hip range, and tenderness around the pubic region. Other causes of Groin Pain, including hip joint problems or an adductor injury, may need consideration before a rehabilitation plan is chosen.

Building recovery

Temporarily reduce sprinting, kicking, cutting, and painful sit-ups rather than repeatedly testing the area. A graded Exercise Therapy programme can begin with comfortable trunk, hip, and pelvic control, then add strengthening and sport-specific loading. Sports Physiotherapy can help set progress markers and adjust training without losing all activity.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, affects walking, or has not improved after reducing the provoking activity. Seek urgent care for severe sudden groin pain, a painful lump that cannot be pushed back, vomiting, fever, testicular pain, or inability to bear weight.

Questions for your doctor

Which tissues appear to be involved? What training can I continue safely? What movement or strength tests will guide my return to sport? How should running, kicking, and direction changes be reintroduced? Would imaging alter my treatment plan?

Questions people ask

Is athletic pubalgia the same as a sports hernia?

The terms are often used for similar activity-related groin pain, but a clinician still needs to distinguish it from a true hernia and other hip or groin conditions.

Can I keep training with athletic pubalgia?

You may be able to maintain modified, non-provocative activity, but painful sprinting, cutting, and kicking should be reduced until a plan is set.
