What should you know about an LED microneedling pen?

A microneedling pen uses a moving cartridge of fine needles to create tiny, deliberate channels in the skin. This controlled injury can stimulate the skin's repair response and may improve the appearance of selected scars, uneven texture, or fine lines over a course of treatment. LED is a separate light-based feature; the colour and settings determine how it is used, and the light does not replace the need for sterile technique or a proper assessment.

The device is not suitable for every concern. Active acne, an infection, a flare of eczema or psoriasis, a tendency to form raised scars, or certain medicines and health conditions can change whether needling is appropriate. A qualified clinician should check the skin first, explain realistic outcomes, and use a clean, single-use needle cartridge where applicable.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about cold sores, allergies, recent procedures, active rashes, medicines, and products that irritate your skin. Arrive with clean skin and follow instructions about pausing retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other sensitising products. Do not needle over a wound, inflamed spot, or suspected infection.

Afterward, mild redness, warmth, tightness, or pinpoint bleeding can occur. Follow the aftercare plan, keep the area clean, avoid picking, and protect newly treated skin from strong sun. Wait until the skin has settled before restarting irritating products or applying makeup, according to the clinician's advice. Home devices can cause burns, infection, scarring, or pigment changes when used too deeply, too often, or without proper cleaning.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, swelling, heat, or redness is worsening instead of easing, or if you notice pus, spreading redness, fever, blisters, or marked colour change. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, or for signs of a severe allergic reaction. A clinician can also assess persistent bleeding, scarring, or a reaction after LED exposure.

Ask which concern the treatment is intended to address, whether your current skin condition and medicines make it unsuitable, which needle depth and LED setting will be used, how the cartridge is sterilised or disposed of, and what aftercare and review plan you will receive.
