Leaking urine suddenly

A sudden, hard-to-delay urge followed by leakage is often called urgency incontinence. It can occur when the bladder contracts before you reach a toilet. Burning, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal pain, cloudy urine, or fever can accompany a urinary tract infection. Constipation, increased fluids, alcohol or caffeinated drinks, new medicines, reduced mobility, and conditions such as diabetes can also affect bladder control. Sudden leakage by itself does not identify one cause.

Write down when the leakage happened, the strength of the urge, drinks taken, medicines, bowel symptoms, and any pain or fever. Arrange a medical review if the change is new, repeats, or interferes with daily life; a clinician may ask for a urine sample and review medicines. Drink normally, plan nearby toilet stops, and avoid holding urine for long periods. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden leakage with new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, severe back pain, confusion, inability to pass urine, blood in the urine, or feeling faint and very unwell. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, vomiting, or painful urination, because infection may need treatment.
