Why laughter can precede fainting

Forceful, prolonged laughter can change pressure inside the chest and affect blood return to the heart. In some people, this briefly lowers blood pressure and reduces brain blood flow, causing light-headedness, tunnel vision or loss of consciousness. Dehydration, missed meals, heat, standing still and some medicines may make fainting easier to trigger. What to do during a warning

Stop laughing and sit or lie down immediately, preferably with your legs raised. Loosen tight clothing, move away from heat and ask someone to stay with you. Do not stand quickly after symptoms settle. Arrange medical review after a first blackout, repeated episodes or an injury. Note the posture, trigger, warning symptoms, recovery time, food and fluid intake, and any palpitations.

When urgent care is needed

Call emergency services if fainting occurs during exercise, with chest pain, severe breathlessness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, seizure-like movements, serious injury, prolonged confusion or no prompt recovery. Urgent assessment is also needed if there is no warning, the episode happens while lying down, or a person has known heart disease.
