What should you know about lateral microdiscectomy?

A herniated disc can irritate or compress a nerve root, producing pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness along the leg. Epidural steroid injection or other non-operative care may be considered before surgery when symptoms and examination make that reasonable.

Contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, increasing redness, new severe pain, or symptoms that are clearly worsening. Seek urgent care for new foot or leg weakness, numbness around the genitals, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty walking that develops quickly. These signs can indicate significant nerve compression and should not wait for routine review.
