Lateral Elbow Dislocation: What to Know

Short answer
A lateral elbow dislocation is a serious injury needing prompt assessment, careful realignment, protection, and guided rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Keep the arm still and obtain urgent medical assessment
- Do not
- Pull, straighten, or manipulate the elbow yourself
- Recovery focus
- Protected movement followed by rehabilitation
What it means
A fall onto an outstretched hand or a forceful twist can disrupt the elbow joint and its supporting ligaments. The elbow may look deformed, swollen, or locked, and movement is usually very painful. Nerves and blood vessels pass close to the joint, so clinicians check hand colour, warmth, sensation, and finger movement. X-rays help identify the displacement and any associated fracture. A dislocation can be reduced without surgery in some cases, but the decision depends on the joint, skin, nerves, blood flow, and fractures. Trying to pull the elbow back yourself can worsen damage.
What to do now
Keep the arm still in the position found, support it with a sling or folded clothing, and remove rings before swelling increases. Do not straighten, massage, or force the joint back into place. Use a wrapped cold pack briefly if it does not delay transport, and avoid food or drink if urgent sedation or a procedure may be needed. A clinician may perform a [Closed Reduction](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/closed-reduction/) followed by temporary protection. Later, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) helps restore safe movement and strength.
When to seek care
Treat a suspected dislocation as an emergency, especially when the elbow is visibly out of place or the hand is numb, pale, cold, or weak. Call emergency services if severe pain, open wounds, uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of circulation is present. After treatment, urgent review is needed if swelling rapidly increases, fingers change colour, sensation worsens, or pain escalates despite immobilisation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Was there a fracture or ligament injury? Were hand circulation and nerve function normal? How long should the elbow be protected? Which movements are safe first? What signs suggest stiffness, instability, or another problem during recovery?

Questions people ask
Can an elbow dislocation be treated at home?
No. It needs prompt assessment because fractures, nerve injury, and circulation problems can accompany the dislocation.
Why is rehabilitation needed after reduction?
Protection allows tissues to settle, while guided movement and strengthening help limit stiffness and restore controlled function.
