Short answer

Latent tuberculosis means TB bacteria are present but contained, so there is no active illness or ordinary spread to other people.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Latent versus active TB

The immune system can hold TB bacteria in check after exposure. A person may have no cough, fever, night sweats or swollen glands, yet still have a positive TB screening result. Latent infection is not the same as active tuberculosis, which can cause illness and may spread when it affects the lungs. The distinction matters because the tests, precautions and medicines are different. A chest X-ray and clinical assessment may be used to look for signs of active disease.

How latent TB is managed

After a positive result, provide a full health history, including possible TB exposure, immune conditions such as HIV Infection, pregnancy and current medicines. Attend the recommended Tuberculosis Screening follow-up so active disease can be assessed. If the infection is latent, a clinician may discuss preventive antibiotics. The plan is individualised: take doses as directed, keep appointments and report possible medicine reactions rather than stopping silently.

Feeling well does not remove the need for follow-up. Keep your test result and treatment details available for future healthcare visits. More information is available about Tuberculosis.

When to seek medical help

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop a persistent cough, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, swollen glands, chest pain or breathlessness. Coughing blood or severe breathing difficulty requires urgent care. These features can have many causes, but they need assessment because they may accompany active TB. While taking preventive medicine, seek urgent advice for yellow skin or eyes, severe rash, repeated vomiting or marked weakness.

Questions to bring

Ask which result supports TB infection, how active disease was excluded, whether a chest X-ray is needed, why preventive treatment is being considered, and whether your medicines or immune health change the plan. Ask who to contact if symptoms or side effects appear.

Questions people ask

Does latent TB mean I am sick now?

Latent infection usually does not cause active illness or symptoms, but follow-up is needed to confirm that active TB is not present.

Can latent TB become active later?

Yes. Changes in immune protection can allow contained bacteria to become active, so preventive treatment may be recommended.
