Possible effects include cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, fatigue, poor appetite, bone pain, headache, confusion, weakness, or seizures. Symptoms are not identical for everyone, and a new symptom needs assessment rather than an assumption about its cause. Scans, blood tests, and the treatment history help the team decide what is happening now.

Chemotherapy is often discussed because it can treat cancer cells throughout the body. Immunotherapy may be suitable in some treatment plans. Radiotherapy can target a painful area, a chest problem, or another site needing local control. Whole brain radiotherapy may be discussed when cancer has spread to the brain, depending on imaging and the person’s condition. Ask about the expected benefit, side effects, timing, and alternatives. Support for nutrition, breathlessness, mood, sleep, and family needs should be part of the plan.

Contact the oncology team quickly for worsening breathlessness, fever, inability to drink, uncontrolled pain, new confusion, severe headache, weakness, or a seizure. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse, or sudden neurological change. Keep the team’s out-of-hours number accessible and bring a current medicine list if travelling to hospital.
