What should you know about late period and tiredness?

Short answer
A late period with tiredness may be linked to pregnancy, stress, hormone changes, anaemia or thyroid problems, so the pattern should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First check
- Test for pregnancy if it is possible.
- Useful record
- Track sleep, energy, bleeding, medicines and associated symptoms.
- Possible checks
- A clinician may consider blood count and thyroid assessment.
Why both symptoms can occur
Tiredness can follow poor sleep, emotional strain, infection, low food intake or an underlying health problem. A late period may result from pregnancy, changing ovulation, stress, weight change, intense exercise, medicines or hormonal contraception. Heavy bleeding in previous cycles can contribute to iron deficiency, which may leave you tired even when the current period is late.
A missed period commonly presents as delayed or absent bleeding. Perimenopause and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can affect cycle timing, but tiredness has many other possible causes and should not be assigned to one condition without review.
How to prepare for a review
If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test. Keep a short record of sleep, energy, bleeding, pain, mood, diet, exercise, medicines and any recent illness. Aim for regular meals, fluids and a manageable sleep routine while you arrange care; do not start iron supplements without discussing the dose and need with a clinician.
Book an appointment if tiredness persists, affects work or daily care, or occurs with repeated late periods, heavy bleeding, hair or skin changes, feeling unusually cold, palpitations or changes in weight. The clinician may consider pregnancy, blood count, thyroid function and other checks based on your history. Read more about Missed Period, Perimenopause and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
When symptoms need prompt care
Seek urgent help for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, new weakness, heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Arrange prompt assessment if you are too weak to carry out usual activities, cannot keep fluids down, or your tiredness is rapidly worsening.
Questions to ask
Ask whether pregnancy, anaemia, thyroid disease, medication effects or a hormone-related condition should be checked. Share your usual cycle length, the date of the last period, previous bleeding, sleep quality, diet, contraception and any symptoms such as dizziness or breathlessness.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy cause tiredness before a missed period?
Pregnancy can cause tiredness early on, but tiredness is not specific. If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test and seek care for pain or bleeding.
Can a late period cause tiredness?
The cycle change itself may not be the cause. Shared factors such as pregnancy, stress, sleep disruption, anaemia or thyroid problems may explain both symptoms.
