Late-onset growth restriction: what to know

Some babies are naturally small and healthy, while growth restriction suggests the placenta may not be supplying enough oxygen and nutrients. A concern may arise when measurements change over time, abdominal growth is slower than expected, or blood-flow patterns are unusual. A single scan does not always provide the full picture.

Your maternity team may compare growth measurements, amniotic fluid, movement history and blood flow. The plan can change as pregnancy progresses because the balance between staying pregnant and delivering is individual.

Attend the appointments offered and tell your maternity team about changes in your baby’s usual movements. Monitoring may include a Growth Scan, blood-flow measurements and Fetal Heart Monitoring. Keep a record of the advice you receive about movements, appointments and where to call outside clinic hours.

There is no home treatment that can make a restricted placenta work normally. Your team may recommend continued observation, extra monitoring or birth when that is safer for you and your baby. If labour is recommended, ask how Induction of Labour would be planned.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if your baby’s movements are reduced or changed, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes or sudden swelling. Do not wait for a scheduled scan when movements feel different.

Ask how your baby’s growth compares over time, what the blood-flow results mean, how often monitoring is needed, which movement changes require a call, and what findings would lead to delivery.
